Inter American University of Puerto Rico Barranquitas Campus (IAUPR-BC)

One of the eleven academic units of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico System (IAUPR), located in the rural and central region of Puerto Rico. It was founded in 1957 and its goal is to provide educational opportunities for the population in a rural area with little access to higher education. Most students (97.6%) from IAUPR-BC are from Barranquitas and the surrounding six low-income municipalities of Orocovis, Corozal, Comerio, Aibonito and Coamo.

In 1957 efforts were joined to establish the foundations of the Barranquitas Campus. The teacher from San Germán, Dr. Ángel Saavedra and the Superintendent of Schools of Barranquitas, Jesús M. Rolón, requested authorization to offer courses in Barranquitas through Educational Extension of the San Germán Polytechnic Institute, today the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. That was the origin of the Barranquitas Campus, which had the honor of being the headquarters of the first Regional College of Puerto Rico.

Six decades that frame the university career of the Barranquitas Campus. In this privileged place, young people and adults study who manage to achieve their academic goals and contribute significantly to society, as they are a reflection of the excellent professional and humanistic quality that characterizes this Institution. In 2004, the Campus changed its mission to add academic offerings at the master’s level.
